Starlink offline / crawling speeds
Sky view, power, cable, and dual-WAN checks before you blame the dish. Most “Starlink is broken” tickets are obstruction, brownout, or a travel-stressed cable — not a dead terminal. Prefer Text when DIY ends.
United Mobile RV installs Starlink hardware on RVs: weatherproof mounts, sealed penetrations, clean cable routing, and a fused DC / PoE path that survives inverter surge. We do not claim a Starlink Certified dealer title — install capability only. Work the pattern first. Capture whether the path fails parked in clear sky, under trees, after a travel day, under heavy 12V load, or only when Peplink is steering traffic. That log usually beats a second blind reboot.
Symptoms
- Starlink app: obstruction, offline, searching, or reboot loops
- Works parked clear-sky; fails under trees / next to buildings / at highway speed
- Wi-Fi OK locally but no internet (LAN up, WAN down)
- Boot loops after inverter surge, microwave, or AC kick-on (looks like ISP failure)
- Cable / connector strain at roof boot after travel days
- Dropouts that line up with low house-bank voltage or converter/charger events
- Dual-WAN with Peplink — unclear which path actually dropped
- Crawling speeds with “online” status — often obstruction margin, thermal throttle, or shared congested sky view, not a magic speed knob
Quick path (owner-safe)
- Check the Starlink app obstruction map, outage status, and exact offline reason. Screenshot it before resetting anything twice.
- Confirm clear-sky: awning rails, AC shrouds, ladder racks, and trees will keep the dish searching. Move the coach ten feet if you can — physics first.
- Power: dedicated fused DC / PoE path — not a shared circuit that sags when the microwave or AC kicks on. Feel the injector for abnormal heat after a failure.
- Cable/boot: gentle wiggle-test after travel days. Do not cut, splice, or lengthen proprietary Starlink cable without OEM guidance.
- If you dual-WAN with Peplink, confirm which WAN actually dropped (Starlink vs cellular) and Health Check status before the double-reset ritual.
- Reboot dish/router once; note firmware. Official app/support only — no sideload “fixes” or community flashes.
- If dropouts line up with heavy 12V loads, meter house voltage at the bank under that load — brownout often masquerades as ISP failure. See 12V battery not charging when the bank itself is soft.
Symptom forks
- Obstruction / searching — mount placement and clear-sky first. Obstruction maps do not lie; remounting into the same null does not help.
- Offline after heavy 12V load — supply sag looking like an ISP failure; fix power before chasing RF or swapping dishes.
- Works parked, fails rolling — vibration, cable strain at the boot, connector seating, or dual-WAN priority flap once cellular handoffs start.
- Wi-Fi OK, no internet — WAN/path down; check app offline reason and Peplink WAN status before factory-resetting the wrong box.
- Reboot loops — PoE injector heat, weak DC feed, undersized wire, or thermal shutdown — stop-DIY if connectors are melted or scorched.
- Dual-WAN with Peplink — Starlink may be fine while Health Check flaps the WAN, or cellular may be the real failure. Isolate paths before blaming the dish. Deep dive: Starlink / Peplink dropouts · Peplink WAN flapping.
Mount and clear-sky
A dish tucked under an awning rail, beside an AC shroud, or in the shadow of a ladder rack will search forever in tree cover. Weatherproof exterior mount, sealed penetrations, strain-relieved cable, and clean routing are the install standard — clear-sky assessed first. Parked open-sky success does not prove the mount will survive highway vibration or a timber campsite.
When the app shows obstruction wedges that match what you see (rail, tree, building), believe it. Relocating the coach or raising the mount beats buying a second kit for the same sky hole. We will say so on a diagnostic — trees, canyons, and weather outages are physics, not always a remount.
Power and boot loops
PoE injectors and dish supplies that share a weak circuit will brown out when the microwave, AC, or inverter surge hits. Confirm fused DC, proper gauge, ignition-sense or always-on policy that matches how you travel, and that the injector is not heat-damaged. A path that “dies every time the AC kicks on” is a power ticket until proven otherwise.
Meter the house bank under the same load that “kills internet.” Soft banks and undersized feeds create reboot loops that look identical to ISP failure in the app. Melted connectors, scorched insulation, or a hot injector after a failure are stop-DIY — Prefer Text rather than restuffing a burnt connector.
Cable, boot, and travel damage
Travel days loosen boots, chew jackets at sharp edges, and unseat connectors that passed at install. Gentle inspection at the roof boot and router / injector ends after corrugated miles is owner-safe. Do not yank the proprietary cable, cut it to “add length,” or splice in random Ethernet. OEM guidance only for cable service; community lengthening tricks are out of scope.
When to stop DIY
- Loose / spinning roof mount or seal failure risk
- PoE injector heat damage or melted DC connectors
- Water at the cable boot; any penetration you cannot reseal correctly
- Community firmware flashes or cable lengthening without OEM guidance
- Working on a wet roof, near power lines, or with unknown 120V / inverter backfeed risk
- Dual-WAN policy you cannot name (bonding vs failover vs Health Check) after two honest isolation attempts
