Dinghy / toad towing setup

Flat-towing a car behind a motorhome needs three things working together: a vehicle the maker says can flat-tow, a proper base plate and tow bar, and supplemental braking. Skip any one and you are outside safety margins — and often outside the law.

Active corridor: Montana · Wyoming · Idaho · Washington — case-by-case beyond.

Field notes

Flat towing means all four wheels on the ground, engine typically off, transmission in the exact mode the owner’s manual requires. Many automatics are not rated for it because fluid does not circulate the way the gearbox needs. Model-year guidance changes — the manual for that VIN wins over a forum list.

Who this is for

Right place if you

Are choosing a toad for a coach. Inherited base plate/tow bar hardware and never verified fitment. Need lighting and braking sorted before a corridor trip.

Maybe not yet if

You tow a trailer instead — see hitch and brake-controller guides. You only need combination weight math — start at GVWR / GCWR / payload.

Compatibility, base plate, tow bar

Manual first

Read the towing section for your exact year/make/model. “My neighbor flat-tows one” is not approval. Some vehicles need ignition tricks, driveshaft disconnects, or are dolly/trailer only.

Base plate

Vehicle-specific brackets bolted to the toad’s structure. Match make/model/year — “it kind of fit” is how frames crack.

Tow bar

Rated for the toad’s weight, latched correctly, and used with the safety cables/chains the bar maker requires. Inspect pivots and latches every hookup.

Coach ratings

GCWR and hitch ratings still apply. A legal toad can still overload a coach that was already near the edge — weigh when unsure.

Supplemental braking & lighting

Coach brakes were not sized to stop another vehicle’s mass for free. Many states require supplemental braking on the towed car above a weight threshold — thresholds vary, so check the states you drive. Systems that apply the toad’s own brakes when the coach brakes take real work off the motorhome. For lights: use a diode kit or a light bar designed for towing — directly splicing into modern body electronics can damage modules. Follow the kit instructions; we do not publish invented wiring SKUs here.

Owner checklist

  • Confirm flat-tow approval in the toad’s manual for your VIN/year
  • Base plate and tow bar match the vehicle and are torqued per their sheets
  • Supplemental brake system charged/paired and tested before departure
  • Tow lights verified (brake, turn, tail) without error lights on the toad
  • Breakaway or coach-required safety devices per bar and brake-system makers
  • Practice disconnect in a quiet lot before you need it on a grade

Failure modes we see

Unapproved flat-tow

Transmission damage after one trip. Manual said no.

No supplemental brakes

Long stopping distances and legal exposure.

Spliced lighting

BCM headaches and dark turns at night.

Ignored GCWR

Toad within its own weight but combo over coach rating.

DIY vs book UMRT

Reasonable DIY

Manual research, careful kit installs per instructions, pre-trip brake/light tests, scale checks.

Book us when

You want base-plate/tow-bar/braking work done once on the MT · WY · ID · WA corridor, or need a pre-trip inspection. Prefer Text year/make/model of coach and toad plus photos of existing hardware.

FAQ

Dolly instead?

Sometimes the only approved path. Follow the vehicle and dolly manuals — different setup, different laws.

Can you list every flat-towable car?

No — lists go stale. The owner’s manual for that year wins.
