Wind is the number one cause of awning damage, and it’s largely preventable. Small pinholes that let light through, delamination (the coating separating from the fabric backing), and any tear longer than a few inches are past the point of a patch kit. Mildew staining alone doesn’t require replacement — that’s usually cleanable — but a fabric that’s gone brittle and cracks when folded is done.
Wind Damage Is Preventable
Most torn awnings happen because the awning was left out in wind gusts it wasn’t rated for.
Replacement Fabric vs. Whole Awning
If the roller tube, arms, and motor (if powered) are still sound, replacing just the fabric is significantly cheaper than a full awning replacement and is a straightforward job with the right measurements.
